ADU - Garage Conversion Case Study 1- The existing 20'x20' two-car garage has been envisioned for use as a mother-in-law/ guest unit and as a studio for rent to allow for additional income in the future. The main home (primary dwelling unit) remains unchanged. Drought tolerant landscaping creates a partitioned private back patio separating the ADU from the single-family home.
Working with a minimal material and color palette, space is maximized by incorporating tall patio doors on the north and south walls. This allows light, ventilation and landscape to become part of the multipurpose space with a built-in kitchenette on the east wall.
The ADU is designed to maximize natural light, take advantage of California's mild climate and encourage inside-outside living. Skylights and glazing enable outside views from any point in the ADU which in turn increases the perception of available space. Built-in cabinets along the west wall incorporate storage and a space to work from home.
