This 1600 SF unit in Hancock Park overlooking the Country Club Golf Course in Los Angeles is a retreat for a travelling TV producer. The design addresses the Client’s requirements to transform the unit from it’s original 70’s interior with smaller spaces to a single larger volume to entertain and host his large circle of family and friends. By carefully removing walls, the original galley kitchen and living room are transformed and enlarged into a single light filled great room. The old bathrooms are relayed and refinished to maximize storage, privacy, efficiency and comfort.

A 500 SF addition to an existing house in the DelRey neighborhood of Los Angeles creates a courtyard as the central focus for this family with young children who love to play and entertain. This budget addition uses passive sustainable strategies to allow natural light and ventilation to cool the house. Each room opens into the courtyard and engages with the landscape on a small tight lot maximizing the perceived space by allowing the outside to become a part of the living spaces.

Waverly Housing is designed to address the park across Olympic Drive. Facing north, it comprises single loaded units above retail and live-work space. The units are designed to capture the blue of Santa Monica Pacific bay, the green of the park and the color of the mountains beyond. They are organised to provide a playful visual variety of form. No two floors are similar so that the residents will have a sense of identity with the place and unit they live in. A floating glassy bridge serves as roof top party room and open deck for the residents while the park facing ground floor retail serves as a pedestrian friendly neighborhood amenity for the City.

Seychelles Housing is sited to take advantage of expansive ocean views. It has a double loaded configuration within three fingers that hark to the grain of the neighborhood to the west. This site accommodates for-sale units in 9-stories above neighborhood-serving retail fronting Ocean Avenue. The units have been laid out with decks and glassy bays that capture panoramic views of the ocean in the west, the mountains in the north and the city to their east. The roof top pool and event space serve as amenity for the residents to enjoy the Californian sun and views of the Pacific beyond. The housing is organized to appear as a series of buildings that step up and step in to create a break in mass with varying heights that creates for large terraces for the residents and renders the City with an interesting skyline.

The two residential towers are designed with a building mass that is divided into three sections: The base and lower floors are strengthened with prominent stone walls that anchor the buildings to the ground and enhance the sense of formal presence. The middle portions of the buildings are animated by an interplay of prefabricated concrete panels with shifting windows, which fulfill both structural and view requirements. The stepped massing of the upper floors relates to the scale of the city while providing a varied and intriguing silhouette. The tower tops are the lightest element, characterized by large glass bays that act as luminescent lanterns.
A series of public plazas, serene gardens and cooling fountains provide refreshing shade in the hot, humid climate.

The South Campus master plan for Providence Saint John’s creates a world class health center in the heart of Santa Monica with an integrated mix of medical, institutional and community serving programs. This rich mix of uses replaces surface parking with thoughtfull development and vibrant open spaces that will contribute to the City’s existing fabric.
A major design concept prioritises a pedestrian connection across north and south of Santa Monica Blvd and then along an upgraded living street that leads to a new south garden along Broadway.
The medical programs are concentrated to the north along the existing hospital and more community oriented uses to the south along Broadway.

Ocean Avenue South is a synthesis of 50% market rate and affordable housing, retail and open spaces in the heart of Santa Monica’s Civic Center —adjacent to City Hall, Courts, hotels, downtown, and a public park. The master plan for this development addresses this spectacular context by configuring the programmatic elements around the concept of a living street to foster a sense of neighborhood. The project is an example of a community that achieves social, economic and environmental sustainability.
A well-organized community process played a valuable role in resolving differing views and helped to give the project an identity that is rooted in its Santa Monica context.

The 13.8 hectare Chun Sen Bi An master plan and housing in Chongqing, China, enjoys sweeping views and direct access to the waterfront and sloped river banks. A formal axis in the center of the site represents the urban, public realm of the project, pulling the pedestrian flow from the city down to the river. This axis is animated by a grand flight of steps that echo the traditional street-stairs of the region. Retail shops are located on both sides of this central spine, adding to the lively urban character of the space. In contrast, an informal path, representing the more private and intimate realm of the project, meanders across the site from east to west that echoes the winding, ancient pedestrian path between the docklands and the upper town that has been used for hundreds of years.
